Used Laptops: Are They Worth It?
Many are wary of purchasing used laptops because they are afraid that they will be less reliable than a new one, and without the protection of a warranty, this can be a rather scary prospect. However, if you don't demand the latest and greatest performance, a used laptop is actually a really great value. Let me explain to you why.
Buying a new laptop is somewhat like buying a new car. When you first get it, its very shiny and fancy, and all your friend will be impressed. As time goes on, though, the laptop becomes a little more broken in and more commonplace as technology moves forward. People will start to get newer and shinier new laptops, while yours will keep on plugging away. You might be tempted to sell this aging laptop and get a nice new one, but you'll quickly find that, just like with a used car, you won't get nearly as much as you paid for it even though it works just fine.
Now, imagine you could be on the other side of this equation, where you get to buy the perfectly working laptop at the low price. This is just like buying a used car, and just what buying a solid cheap used laptop will allow you to do. Sure, you don't get the warranty, but the super low price you paid also means you might come out way ahead. In fact, you probably will.
Another cool thing about buying used cheap laptops is that you can get some *really* cheap old models that will still work great for basic internet, e-mail, and office applications. My personal favorites are the used IBM Thinkpads, which are very reliable machines. You can buy one of these for cheap that is several years old, reinstall the OS (maybe put Linux on there) and have a great little portable machine.
Even if you're a gamer, you can get some good mileage by getting something like a used Alienware laptop. This won't keep you up with current games, but they are still powerful enough to play many great classic while you're on the road. Worth checking, for sure, as you will save a lot of money.
So, are used cheap laptops the solution? Maybe not for everyone, but for many, they are the way to go. The risk of the laptop breaking is much lower than most people imagine, so you can take advantage the reduced demand due to other people's fear, and get your self a great machine at a great price.
