This post is a little different from my others. I'm not here to tell you about which used cheap laptop you should be buying. You can check around the rest of the site for that.

What I'd like to talk to you about a bit is how you can make money online, using only your dinky little used laptop and your wits.

Of course, many of you have probably already hit the back button, since you've all seen this scam before. And you'd probably be justified, 99% of your make money online information in the internet is 100% useless in every possible way. Visiting many of these sites, you get the impression that the the $97 dollar ebook you're being pitch will read something like this:

1. First, create a website telling people how they can make money online by buying your tell all e-book.
2. Buy ads for your site.
3. Sell an e-book that starts off "First, create a website telling people how they can make money online by buying your tell all e-book...."

You get the idea. These people are scammers. However, what you may not know is that there is a certain group of make money online blogs that are there to help you out. If you read and follow them well, you and your used cheap laptop could be in good business soon.

First, I'd like to introduce you to Griz. Griz is all about telling you how to make money online. In fact, he tells you how to do this without needing to spend a lot of cash. Griz makes quite a bit of money using free websites, like Google's Blogger, which can be used free by any with a laptop computer and an internet connection. The Problem

It happens to many desktop owners. They see others walking around, carrying their lightweight computers and being able to stay in constant connectivity. Anytime, anywhere, being a laptop owner mean you can get your work done. Many crave this ability, but given the expense of a new laptop, aren't able to afford it.

A Solution?

Of course, there is a solution: used laptops. However, many used laptops are slow, too slow to run many modern applications. Many are also virus ridden and sluggish. To make matters worse, they often come with old operating systems that can be flaky at the best of times (Windows ME, anyone?). This systems may still run, but good luck getting anything done with them.

The Real Solution: Lightweight Linux

Ah, yes, good old Linux. Thanks to the open source operating system's flexibility, you can get many highly functional Linux distributions that will run great on an old laptop. Additionally, you'll have a wide selection of open source applications to choose from, and very few security problems to worry about. A good fit for an old laptop, indeed.

So, which distributions are lightweight enough to serve this purpose well? The most popular choice for this would most likely be the venerable Damn Small Linux, which provides a tried and true system for those looking for a minimal system install. Another good option for fans of the popular Ubuntu distro is Fluxbuntu, which is simply Ubuntu with a very lightweight window manager, Fluxbox. You can start with one of these lightweight systems, and slowly add functionality with time as you feel you have the resources.

Speaking of resources, you might find that even with one of these lightweight Linux distros, your performance isn't quite up to par. The biggest cause of poor performance in old laptops is the lack of RAM. Fortunately, it is often possible to upgrade the RAM in an old laptop fairly cheaply. This should greatly improve its performance in everyday computing applications.

So, you want to join the snazzy Apple laptop toting crowd, and think that buying used is that best way to do it? You're thinking right, but before you buy your used Apple laptop, there are several things you need know that are unique when buying Apple.

These can still be a good buy, since much software (including the newest MacOS, Leopard) can still run on these processors. However, as time rolls on, you're likely to see support for these start to drop. Still, if your needs are basic, these can be a great value.

If you get the Intel models, keep in mind that you'll have the added flexibility of being able to run both Mac OS X and Windows on the same machine. This is great for those who have a few Windows applications that they still need to use from time to time. These models will be more expensive, but the added performance can be worth it for many.

Another factor to consider is which operating system your Apple laptop comes equipped with. Since Apple updates OS X every year, it is good to remain on the cutting edge as much as possible to ensure that all the software you need will still work well. As stated before, OS X Leopard is the newest version, with a newer version known as "Snow Leopard" on its way soon. If you buy a laptop with an older system, you can still upgrade to a newer version, which will generally run you around $100. Just something to keep in mind.
