Visiting many of these sites, you get the impression that the the $97 dollar ebook you're being pitch will read something like this:

1. First, create a website telling people how they can make money online by buying your tell all e-book.
2. Buy ads for your site.
3. Sell an e-book that starts off "First, create a website telling people how they can make money online by buying your tell all e-book...."

You get the idea. These people are scammers. However, what you may not know is that there is a certain group of make money online blogs that are there to help you out. If you read and follow them well, you and your used cheap laptop could be in good business soon.

First, I'd like to introduce you to Griz. Griz is all about telling you how to make money online. In fact, he tells you how to do this without needing to spend a lot of cash. It happens to many desktop owners. They see others walking around, carrying their lightweight computers and being able to stay in constant connectivity. Anytime, anywhere, being a laptop owner mean you can get your work done. Many crave this ability, but given the expense of a new laptop, aren't able to afford it.

Additionally, you'll have a wide selection of open source applications to choose from, and very few security problems to worry about. A good fit for an old laptop, indeed.

So, which distributions are lightweight enough to serve this purpose well? The most popular choice for this would most likely be the venerable Damn Small Linux, which provides a tried and true system for those looking for a minimal system install. Another good option for fans of the popular Ubuntu distro is Fluxbuntu, which is simply Ubuntu with a very lightweight window manager, Fluxbox. You can start with one of these lightweight systems, and slowly add functionality with time as you feel you have the resources.

Speaking of resources, you might find that even with one of these lightweight Linux distros, your performance isn't quite up to par. The biggest cause of poor performance in old laptops is the lack of RAM. Fortunately, it is often possible to upgrade the RAM in an old laptop fairly cheaply. This should greatly improve its performance in everyday computing applications.

You can buy one of these for cheap that is several years old, reinstall the OS (maybe put Linux on there) and have a great little portable machine.

Even if you're a gamer, you can get some good mileage by getting something like a used Alienware laptop. This won't keep you up with current games, but they are still powerful enough to play many great classic while you're on the road. Worth checking, for sure, as you will save a lot of money.

The risk of the laptop breaking is much lower than most people imagine, so you can take advantage the reduced demand due to other people's fear, and get your self a great machine at a great price. Of course, all the usual bits of used laptop buying advice sill come into play. Check the sellers feedback, read the listing carefully, read up on the quality of the model you're looking into. However, because of some of Apple's unique design decisions, there are a couple other things you must know before your buy.

Firstly, Apple likes to change things. This is nice, because they're always moving forward, but it also means that you can get left behind if you buy certain technologies. The biggest example of this is the fairly recent PowerPC to Intel switch. Since Apple moved from IBM's PowerPC based processors to the fast and cooler Intel ones, the laptop line has been split. Before, the low end laptops (generally made out of plastic) were known as iBooks, and the high end metal models were known as PowerBooks. With the Intel switch, the low end models became the MacBooks, and the high end the MacBook Pros. They still kept the same white plastic/brushed aluminum look to distinguish the models, but what was on the inside was very different.

If you're looking into used Apple laptops, you'll find that there are still many PowerPC based models out there. These can still be a good buy, since much software (including the newest MacOS, Leopard) can still run on these processors. However, as time rolls on, you're likely to see support for these start to drop. Still, if your needs are basic, these can be a great value.

If you get the Intel models, keep in mind that you'll have the added flexibility of being able to run both Mac OS X and Windows on the same machine. This is great for those who have a few Windows applications that they still need to use from time to time. These models will be more expensive, but the added performance can be worth it for many.

Another factor to consider is which operating system your Apple laptop comes equipped with. Since Apple updates OS X every year, it is good to remain on the cutting edge as much as possible to ensure that all the software you need will still work well. As stated before, OS X Leopard is the newest version, with a newer version known as "Snow Leopard" on its way soon. If you buy a laptop with an older system, you can still upgrade to a newer version, which will generally run you around $100. Just something to keep in mind.

So, if you're ready to take the plunge and become a Mac owner, be sure that you check the listings carefully to make sure that you're getting exactly what you need. Mac's are great buys, particularly used, but a little homework can save you a lot of headache.
